GIEKURUM LAMBU ‘G-LAMBU’ Compressed Earth Bricks local community projects

GIEKURUM LAMBU ‘G-LAMBU’ GIRLS DORMITORY

This project is for a remote Secondary School in the Karatu District. The community has established their own Co-operative to build and sell compressed earth bricks. Currently they are using them to build teachers classrooms, latrines and other school buildings. The long term community plan is for a Girls Dormitory, which the Government will have to agree to at least partially fund and support in order for it to be sustainable long term . As they prove that they are becoming sustainable and self sufficient with this small brick building business, the government is becoming more and more interested. Girls drop out rate there is over 75% percent by their 3rd year of school. This is due to various factors, including the long distance they must travel each day to school. Studies have shown extreme differences in retention rates and higher performance rates of girls who stay in School Dormitory facilities during the week. When surveyed if they would like the chance to stay in a Dormitory during the school week , the current girls at the school voted 100% “YES! “. This project is using Local and Sustainable Building techniques, locally sourced compressed earth bricks, and other sustainable and eco friendly building techniques. The most exciting part of this project is that the G Lambo community is committed to assisting with the building process of the dormitory. They have already contributed to building classrooms at the school and proven their support for the future of their children. Remote communities like this get little or no tourism visits, thus are completely lacking in outside funding. Please help us make this community dream a Reality! Your Kind Support and Donations will make all the difference. For more information visit https://www.bricksforlife.org/

KEF has currently supported the construction of 2 kitchens and is fundraising for an area wide project of building sustainably built Kitchen structures at schools in the Karatu area. For children at these schools, lunch is often their main meal of the day. A New Kitchen Unit is greatly needed to be able to provide lunch to all of the children. Kitchens will use compressed earth bricks, and energy efficient stoves. In 2020 KEF donors funded the construction of 2 kitchens using these techniques. Kitchens in this project were built at Askofu Primary School and G-Lambo Secondary School.

haymu and Ganako primary SchooL CLASSROOMS FINISHED. THANKS TO OUR AMAZING DONORS!

Ganako Primary School includes integrated classes with handicapped children which sadly is not usual in the area. Our wonderful sponsors have assisted in building classrooms, lavatories and continued plans for 2023 for more classrooms.

Ganako Primary New Classrooms

Haymu Primary School is situated in Ayalabe Village in Karatu District and it was founded in 2009 with 75 students and 3 teachers and grades from Kindergarten thru 7.  The school has currently 500 students- 245 boys and 255 girls, and 14 teachers.  There are 5 completed classrooms at the moment, but more space was needed.   Our donors helped to get the 2 classrooms and 1 teachers office built in 2018, 2019. The funds were used to finish construction on the roof, walls, floor, doors, windows as well as painting the interior and exterior.  Thank you! Please consider to donate to our current projects;

DESKS AND CHAIRS PROGRAM

KEF will continue to offer their 'Donate a Desk' program.  One primary school desk that is designed for 2 students cost around $70 USD to build and the name of the donor goes on the front of each desk. As such we often get donations for as few as one desk or as many as 50.
